Developer talks with potential warehouse user

The slabs are just being poured and construction isn’t expected to wrap up until April, but there is serious interest in the first warehouse being constructed by NorthPoint Development at Antrim Commons off U.S. 11 near Exit 3 of Interstate 81.

Eric Watts, project manager for NorthPoint, thanked Antrim Township supervisors for the township’s help and mentioned the potential business without going into specifics at Tuesday night’s meeting.

“We nearly have our first user,” Watt said. “We’re very optimistic.”

He explained the user is initially interested in 950,000 square feet of the 1,100,000-million-square-foot building. The remainder of the space is still being marketed, but “we think the user is probably going to take it.”

Outside the meeting, Watts said the interested business falls into the large industrial, big box user, logistics and e-commerce realm. He did not have an employment figure, but said 400 parking spaces have been mandated and there will be different shifts.

The business would like to start moving racks into the building in February and occupy it in June.

NorthPoint introduced the Antrim Commons project early this year and the long-term plan is for more than 4 million square feet of warehouse space in five buildings and the creation of thousands of jobs. Plans for the next building — 1,150,000 square feet — are in the approval process, Watts said.

Brent Miles, NorthPoint vice president, said in February that the warehouses will likely be used for e-commerce fulfillment with jobs that typically pay $15 to $20 an hours. Based in Kansas City, NorthPoint has between 70 and 80 warehouses across the country.
