FedEx Ground will hire 300 for distribution center in Kansas City’s Northland Park

FedEx Ground will begin operations next month out of a new 548,500-square-foot large package distribution center within Kansas City’s Northland Park.

The new distribution center at 4029 N. Pleasant Ave. is expected to create approximately 300 jobs upon opening, a count the company plans to grow as necessary to support increased demand for service in the area, FedEx Ground spokeswoman Nikki Mendicino told the Kansas City Business Journal.

FedEx’s website on Monday listed openings for operations administrative and package handler jobs at the new address.

The Pittsburgh-based day-certain delivery division of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) entered a lease agreement for Northland Park 6, Mendicino said in an email Tuesday. FedEx Freight, the Memphis-based company’s freight services division, also operates a nearby service center at 4077 N. Norfleet Rd.

Riverside-based NorthPoint Development completed development of the building earlier this year — its largest to date at the industrial park near Missouri Highway 210 and Kimball Drive. The building includes 42 dock positions, four drive-in docks and 130 trailer stalls.

Building, electrical, fire sprinkler and mechanical permits valued at approximately $14.7 million were issued for FedEx Ground’s distribution center between June 3 and Monday — some under the facility’s codename, Project Balance.

“The site was chosen because of its ease of access to major highways, proximity to customers’ distribution centers and a strong local community workforce for recruiting employees,” Mendicino said in an emailed statement. “The new facility is part of a network expansion to boost daily package volume capacity and further enhance the speed and service capabilities of the FedEx Ground network.”

She said FedEx Ground does not disclose project costs or expected investment amounts for individual projects.

FedEx Ground had 591 operating facilities and 39 regional hubs across the U.S. and Canada as of May 31, which it uses in processing an average daily volume of more than 9 million packages.

The division’s revenue increased 36% year-over-year during FedEx Corp.’s fiscal first quarter, which ended Aug. 31, from $5.18 billion in 2019 to $7.04 billion in 2020, according to the company’s latest earnings report.

FedEx Corp. currently employs 4,100 people in the metro area and more than 400,000 overall.

NorthPoint Development has completed six warehouses totaling about 2.4 million square feet at its $250 million Northland Park since 2018, with construction underway on the 416,000-square-foot Building 7 and the 274,370-square-foot Building 8 as of late August.
